Bellringing at St. Nicholas' Church
St Nicholas' Church has a peal of 6 bells, the heaviest being the tenor at 19 cwt. The bells and clock were first installed in the church in 1873, five years after it opened, at a cost of £1000. The first peal was rung in our tower in 1906.
The Belfry was refurbished in 2000, when the old mechanical clock mechanism was removed and new electronic clock motors, wood panelling and a false ceiling put in place.

Bell ringing is a very social past-time with regular meetings not only in St Nicholas but also every month in a bell tower somewhere in the area. Local towers can also be visited on a weekly basis on their regular practice nights. Away-days are arranged when we travel much farther a-field and join ringers from other towers to visit pastures new.
Our ringers support each other not only during our practice nights but also in other ways away from the church buildings, meeting for parties, meals out etc., indeed any excuse to gather together really! Often, on our Friday practice nights, we have visitors from other towers to help us, but need new members to help us to ring for the services at St Nicholas’.

Practice nights are Wednesday for beginners and Friday for those wishing to develop and learn new skills. All are welcome. If you wish to come along to see what happens and join in the social afterwards, just turn up a little before 7pm on Fridays letting our tower captain, Bill Hedley, know you are coming or see him to arrange a time.

Visits
If visitors wish to come to a practice they are advised to contact our tower captain, Mr Bill Hedley at 14 Hareside, Cramlington, NE23 6BH, or telephone 01670 713114.
Community organisations requiring more details and to arrange a visit should also contact him in the first instance.
